Jacobito Design was recently hired to build a website that would be a custom WordPress build. During the initial consultation, we were asked what might help make their website more search engine friendly. Our response included the following points:
Content is King!
The first rule in understanding search engine optimization (SEO) is to know that above all else, content is king. Let me repeat that, CONTENT IS KING! Having ample content that is relevant to the keywords you’re wanting to be found under is the first and most important part of making your website search engine friendly.
HTML Hierarchy
The second part of making your website more search engine friendly is understanding basic HTML, in terms of HTML tags. You’ll also want to understand the sequence of how those tags should be used when implementing content. It’s important to remember that the most important information is at the top of the page, so should be wrapped with the most important tag, and so on down the hierarchal line.
Relevant Title & Meta Description Tags
You know how Google lays out listings when doing a search? The bulleted listing starts with the title of the page being linked to, then shows the linking URL, then shows the description of the page. Having the ability to optimize both these tags will help make your website more search engine friendly.
Internal Linking
Google, Bing and other search engines like websites that have great internal linking structures. The thought is that it links relevant keyword texts to another part of the website that can elaborate a little more. The way I like to think of it is that you really want your website to emulate the macrocosm. The macrocosm being the world wide web itself.
So, in short, these are the basics of what you can do to make your website more search engine friendly. Of course, there is a lot more to search engine optimization, but if you are looking for a start, and want to be proactive, this is a great place to start.
